Bram
Stoker was born in Dublin (Ireland) in 1847 but he lived in
London most of his life. He
wrote several novels about horror and
supernatural themes but only one of them is remembered: Dracula, which he published in 1897.
Before
writing Dracula he spent
eight years researching European folklore
and stories of vampires.
The
story has become the basis for lots of films in the
twentieth century, the most famous are Nosferatu
(1922), Dracula (1931) and Bram Stoker’s
Dracula (1992).
Dracula is not really the first vampire novel, John Polidori
had already written The Vampyre in 1819, and
oral legends about this topic were commoneven before.
The character
of Dracula is based partially on these earlier
stories and also on a real person: Vlad II Dracul, king of Wallachia,
who is said to have killed more than 100000
people.
The story
begins with Jonathan Harker, an English lawyer
who is invited to the count’s castle in Transylvania. He soon
discovers he has become a prisoner in the castle and he begins to
see disquieting things in Dracula’s daily life.
He tries to escape but meets three female
vampires, the brides of Dracula. Harker
finally escapes alive.
Afterwards, a Russian ship
sinks near Whitby on the coast of England. All
passengers die. A huge dog, or
wolf is seen, running from the ship.
Count Dracula in his animal form has arrived in England.....
