Oliver Twist

by

Charles Dickens

To start with this new section, I would like to tell you about Charles Dickens, one of the most well-known writers of the XIX century, he wrote a lot of books and stories and some of them were very long, (over 1000 pages) but he liked writing and he didn't get tired because he earned a lot of money and became very rich. Anyway, he never forgot his humble origins, (his father was put to prison because of his debts and he was an alcoholic) and Dickens' books are mostly about poor people who suffer a lot (especially in their childhood).

Among his most famous works I could mention David Copperfield, a Christmas Carol, Great Expectations and of course, Oliver Twist!

This book was one of his first ones and   it tells the story of an orphan child who lives in an orphanage, full of rats, and the teachers are very bad and beat him very often, he is very sad and depressed, besides he eats very little and is very thin.

Charles Dickens

(1813-1870)

One day, he manages to escape and he goes to London where new problems await him. There he meets Artful Dodger, an old man who offers him a place to live but he is the leader of a gang of thieves who forces him to steal, fortunately there is a happy end but I won't tell you about it. Read the novel!!

This story shows very clearly the consequences of industrialization in XIX century England where a lot of children had to work for a living and they couldn't go to school or play. Even though, England was in fact a strong nation with a large empire. Life is sometimes contradictory!!
